Easy ways to make this St Patrick’s Day fun
Post-divorce life is hard for many children as they grapple with the fact that their parents are not together anymore. This is a transition stage, and children’s emotional state is very fragile during this time. There may be more tears, laughs, and mood swings that a parent would typically expect, and this is completely normal. Eventually your children will adjust and get used to the changes that have taken place in their lives.
During this adjustment period be aware of how your children may be feeling and be there to support them and love them. This time can seem very sad, so it may be good to get festive and celebrate whatever holiday is next on the calendar. This month it is St Patrick’s Day, a day for green and the luck of the Irish. If you already have an existing tradition be sure to do them with your children and carry on the tradition. This will also give the children a sense of normalcy that has been lacking in their lives.
If you have never been a big St Patrick’s Day celebrator, then this year may just be the year to change that. Create some activities that can become traditions you do with your children each year. This could be using green food dye to dye all of the milk in the house green, which is a cheap yet fun way to celebrate, and it does not ruin your milk. Another option is help your children set up a leprechaun trap, and leave gold coins or treats there for them to discover in the morning.
For older kids having a green themed meal or treat is a way to celebrate the holiday without being cheesy, or as teenagers say “embarrassing”. You could also buy fun green necklaces, earring, headbands, and other simple clothing to signify the day.
