Helping kids understand divorce

Divorce is difficult. It can be especially hard for kids as they try to make sense of their changing environment. It is common for kids to feel sad, confused, mad, or even frustrated. Parents need to help their kids through the transitional stage of going through a divorce. It will be hard for everyone involved but do not seek comfort from your children. They may seem like they want it but in the long run it can be detrimental. Kids need to be comforted not help you and be your source of comfort. 

 

The very first thing parents need to do is tell their kids. Talk to them as soon as your decision is certain. Being upfront and communicating can build trust and strengthen relationships. If possible have both parents present to talk about what will happen. Try to keep all emotion, especially anger, out of the conversation. Practicing what you are going to say can help everyone remain calm and collected. Every family will have different discussions, it can be helpful to be aware of the age groups you are addressing and keep everything on a level everyone can understand. In addition to anything you say make sure the kids understand how much you love them. 

 

After the initial talk, watch your kids carefully. Kids react in different ways. Some may react right after you finish, but for others it could take a few days for the idea of a divorce to become a reality to them. Let your kids know it is ok to react and you are there for them if they want to talk. Most kids will likely ask questions regarding the future. You may not have all of the answers but try to answer them to the best of your abilities. Giving answers to their questions can give kids stability and increase their trust in you. 

 

Life will most likely get crazy. You or your spouse will be moving out and finding new housing. You have to adjust to living as a single parent. Try to make the transition easy. Kids want to have consistency, Having a set routine can help kids get used to their new normal. Get involved in their life. BE their at their various performances and games. Let them know you are there for them.
