Introducing the idea of a step-parent

 In Uncategorized

Having your parents get divorced causes massive change in a child’s life. There are many things that will change and be different. It will take time for your children to adjust, and each child will handle these changes in different ways. After a divorce, taken care of with the help of your Divorce Lawyer Provo, you may choose to date again, and could be getting married again. This decision will cause another chain of events that will affect your children. These changes could include: moving to a new home, getting new step-siblings, changing schools, and having a new parental figure in their lives. One of the first hurdles you will reach when getting remarried is finding a way to communicate the news to your children.

The decision of when to introduce your new partner to your children is personal and different for every couple. There is no right or wrong answer, the best way to decide is to discuss it with your partner and decide what is best for your particular situation. If you get into a serious relationship with a person, and see this being long term it may be a good time to introduce your children to them. Your children can become familiar with this person and they can get to know each other better. Introducing short-term partners can cause children grief as they get attached to someone that will not be in their lives for an extended amount of time.

If your children have already met your partner it may be easier for them to accept the fact that you will be getting remarried. Being open with your children before and after getting engaged or as you begin to talk about getting married can help prepare them for the moment you do get remarried. They will have to process this news and come to accept it, even if they are not excited about it.

You children may not be happy to hear you will be getting remarried. This is normal behavior, but can be something that needs to be handled and talked about. If your child is struggling, consider personal or family counseling to help get down to the root of the problem and start solving them.
